Does nandrolone raise prolactin, and does a high prolactin result explain sexual side effects?
Separating a popular explanation from a confirmed hormonal diagnosis.
High prolactin can suppress reproductive signaling and contribute to low testosterone, infertility and sexual symptoms. That does not establish that every sexual problem during nandrolone use is caused by prolactin. Nandrolone can alter the hormonal environment and suppress gonadotropins, but describing it as progestogenic is not the same as demonstrating a predictable prolactin increase in humans. The available evidence does not support diagnosing “high prolactin” from libido, erection quality or the name of the steroid alone.[1][2]
A measured elevation also needs context. Medications, hypothyroidism, pituitary conditions and other factors can raise prolactin, and the clinician may repeat or further investigate a result before attributing symptoms to it. Sexual function can additionally reflect estradiol balance, vascular health, sleep, mood and medication effects. Taking a prolactin-lowering drug solely because nandrolone is being used bypasses that assessment. The defensible approach is to establish whether prolactin is persistently abnormal, identify the cause, and judge whether it plausibly explains the symptoms.[1]
