Do myostatin inhibitors actually build muscle in humans?
A real biological pathway does not validate every product sold under its name.
The pathway is real. Myostatin and related activin signals help regulate muscle growth, and drugs that alter this signaling have produced human body-composition effects. In a randomized study of adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes, the activin-receptor antibody bimagrumab reduced fat mass and increased lean mass.[1]
The 2026 BELIEVE trial studied bimagrumab with semaglutide in adults with obesity, extending the clinical evidence beyond early laboratory work. It also documented adverse effects and treatment discontinuations. Bimagrumab blocks activin type II receptors and influences more than myostatin alone, so its results cannot be assigned automatically to every purported myostatin inhibitor.[2]
A vial labeled follistatin, an experimental SARM, and a clinical antibody are different interventions. Shared marketing language does not establish equivalent action, quality, safety, or muscle gains. Even a measured increase in lean mass needs to be distinguished from better strength and function. The useful question is which verified agent improved which human outcome.[1][2]
